This little brother weights 160 lbs!

The driving goal here is to keep the product simple and provide Oracle Appliance Manager. So finally Oracle uses the term "appliance" which is used to shy away from as Exadata was not meant to be plug and play. The interesting concept is that customers can license as many cores they want with some restrictions like same number of cores on each server (up to 24 in the box). I believe this is new to Oracle too. The CPU cores drive the cost of the Oracle RDBMs license usually so this can be game changing. The appliance runs Oracle Linux (OEL) and can used used as RAC. It can run one powerful DB instance or multiple say your Dev, Test and QA instances.

So how does it compare with Exadata entry level say 1/4 RACK? While a 1/4 RACK is 60 cores of CPU and 72 TB or storage, the DB appliance is only 24 cores (with ability to license a subset of those) and 12 TB of storage max. It is meant for up to 4 TB databases. Oracle will not license Hybrid Columnar Compression (HCC) or the Smart Scan with this box. Thus some of the "secret sauce" of the Exadata has been preserved. The DB appliance does come with the solid state disk (4 x 73 GB) for improving the redo performance.

With an entry level price for hardware in the range of $50,000, it is could appeal to the mid-market companies. The box will support 11g (11.2.0.2) to begin with.

Oracle Exadata SIG Webcast on July 6, 2011

Exadata SIG Webcast by Arup Nanda on July 6, 2011 at noon EDT

Exadata for the Oracle DBA by by - Arup Nanda Oracle ACE Director

Abstract: Exadata is, at the heart of it, is an Oracle 11.2 RAC Database. Through consolidation, you can capitalize on the extreme CPU, I/O, and memory resources in an Oracle Exadata Database Machine. One important aspect of consolidation is performance, since excessive loads or runaway querie! s from one workload can mar the performance and stability of the other workloads and databases. In this presentation, you will learn how to use Resource Manager to control how databases and workloads within databases utilize CPU, I/O, and other resources. For hosted or cloud environments, you will learn how to configure Resource Manager to ensure consistent and predictable performance. This presentation will include best practice tips and show results from recent Resource Manager tests.

Bio:
Sue Lee is a senior development ma! nager in the Oracle RDBMS division. Exadata is tightly integrated with ASM and provides the underlying disks that have traditionally been presented to ASM by the operating system. Looking at all the various intricacies of cell storage can be a little daunting at first. There are several layers of abstraction between physical disks and the ASM diskgroups many DBA’s are familiar with. If you’ve never worked with Oracle’s ASM product there will be a lot of new terms and concepts to understand there as well. This presentation discusses the various layers of abstraction, from physical disk to grid disk and how they are used to provide storage for the Oracle database. From there, we’ll take a look at the options for carving up and presenting Exadata grid disks to the database tier. The Oracle recommended approach is to create a few large “pools” of disk across all storage cells. While this approach generally works well from a performance standpoint, there are reasons to consider alternate strategies. Sometimes, isolating a set of storage cells to form a separate storage grid is desirable. This provides separation from more critical systems within the Exadata enclosure so that patches may be installed and tested before they are implemented in production. We’ll take a look at how ASM provides fault tolerance and storage virtualization to databases and how all the various pieces work together to provide flexible, high performance storage to the Oracle database.

Bio:
Randy Johnson is a Principal Consultant at Enkitec, a consulting firm specializing in Oracle. Ever since I have started following Oracle Exadata and started the Oracle Exadata SIG (http://OracleExadata.org).

In about two weeks, I will be giving a talk titled "Competing on Appliances" at Denver in RMOUG 2011. So this was quite timely!

Teradata has earned the top honors being one of the pioneers in the data warehouse appliance space. Oracle with its three distinct data warehouse solutions: Oracle stand-alone Db 11g, Reference Configurations on variety of hardware and Exadata with Exadata Storage Server, top the next spot. In recent years though, I think the reference configuration or optimized warehouse initiative has faded away as obviously Oracle wants to promote their own H/W stack. Thus, two main options are Oracle DB on traditional hardware and Exadata systems. Keeping in mind that Exadata specially V2 came out in end of 2009, its position is pretty comfortable in the top quadrant. IBM Smart Analytics took the next spot even though Netezza was measured in its own for 2010. Sybase IQ has helped to put SAP on this map too!

Oracle Exadata Sessions at Openworld 2010

Oracle Exadata SIG meeting on Sunday at Moscone W, 1st Floor, North side.
Time 10:30 AM PT, come meet folks like Robert Stackowiak, VP BI at Oracle and author of upcoming book on Exadata V2, Richard Niemiec, former President of IOUG, Andy Flower, current President of IOUG, Arup Nanda, DBA of the year 2003 and many other Oracle experts!

General Session: Why Standardize on Oracle Database 11g?
Oracle Senior VP Andy Mendelsohn covers the benefits of upgrading to Oracle Database 11g. What does this mean for HP? It is the end of the HP Oracle Database Machine or the Exadata 1.

The Exadata Database Machine Version 2, made jointly by Oracle and SUN. It is pitched as the world's fastest machine for both data warehousing and online transaction processing (OLTP). Thus is meant for mixed mode loads. It is interesting that Larry, when announcing he Exadata I, last year said that OLTP system have 70% query load. Thus, Exadata 2, is a combination of faster query and write, to target the OLTP and hybtid loads on the large databases.

Exadata 2 uses the industry standard H/W components along with the FlashFire technology from Sun. The Exadata 2 requires Oracle 11g R2 and Oracle Exadata Storage Server Software Release 11.2. Larry claimed that the Sun Oracle Database Machine Version 2 is twice as fast as Version 1 for data warehousing. Oracle (and HP) will no longer make the Exadata 1 now.

The Sun Oracle Database Machine now is not confined to data warehousing applications. The difference is the addition of Exadata Smart Flash Cache based on Sun FlashFire technology to deliver extreme performance and scalability for online transaction processing (OLTP). Thus you can now have say Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) and your Oracle BI Data Warehouse, all on the same Exadata 2 and the new hardware can handle mixed workload.

Exadata Version 2 will be available in four models:
> full rack (8 database servers and 14 storage servers),
> half-rack (4 database servers and 7 storage servers),
> quarter-rack (2 database servers and 3 storage servers) and
> a basic system (1 database server and 1 storage server).

All four Exadata configurations are available immediately to the customers. Larry said that with the Sun Oracle Database Machine, Oracle customers can store more data and search data more than ten-times faster without making any changes to applications.

Here is the Hardware and Software stack for Exadata 2

Sun's FlashFire memory cards enable high performance OLTP
80% Faster CPUs - Intel Xeon (Nehalem) processors
50% Faster Disks - 600 GB SAS Disks at 6 Gigabits/second
200% Faster Memory - DDR3 memory
125% More Memory - 72 Gigabytes per database server
100% Faster Network - 40 Gigabits/second InfiniBand
Raw disk capacity of 100 TB (SAS) or 336 TB (SATA) per rack

Software from Oracle

Features the world's first flash-enabled database - Oracle 11g Release 2
Hybrid columnar compression for 10-50 times data compression
Scans on compressed data for even faster query execution
Storage Indexes to further reduce disk I/Os
Offloading of query processing to storage using Smart Scans
Smart scans of Data Mining models in storage servers
Applications running on the Sun Oracle Database Machine achieve up to 1 Million I/O Operations per Second to Flash Storage

Exadata SIG at Oracle Openworld 2010 - Click on the Image to Enlarge it

<img style="display:block;
